Abstract

This study examines the use of Digital Image Processing techniques to measure and analyze the distribution of microbubble diameters in a swirl flow type Microbubble Generator with variations in water flow rate (QL) and air flow rate (QG). Digital image processing techniques were chosen because they can perform measurements automatically, quickly, and consistently, compared to conventional methods which are often slow and less accurate. This study uses MATLAB R2021a with the Image Processing Toolbox to process video recordings from a Canon 1200D camera, which are converted and extracted into images in TIF format. This study focuses on the distribution of bubbles in water discharge conditions of 24 lpm, 32 lpm, and 40 lpm and variations in air discharge from 0.1 to 0.8 lpm.

The results of the analysis show that at low water discharge (24 lpm), the bubble size tends to be smaller and more centralized, while at higher water discharge (32 lpm and 40 lpm), the bubble size distribution is more even and varied. The final result of this image processing data extraction is the distribution of microbubble diameters expressed in the Probability Distribution Function (PDF) and is used to present a comparison of the distribution of air bubble dimensions produced by MBG. Challenges faced in this study include validation at high QG, where there are deviations in the distribution results due to imaging quality or physical interference.
