Abstract

This study aims to determine the effect of a broken bend (miter elbow) on the pressure drop of two-phase flow. The use of elbows in piping systems is very common because it meets the needs of the design and geometry of the piping system. The test device used an acrylic pipe with an inside diameter of 32 mm in a vertical position, connected to a 45o elbow miter and continued with a pipe with a 45o slope. Water and air are used as working fluids. The tests were carried out with variations in the superficial velocity of the liquid (USL) from 0.30-0.50 m/s and the volumetric quality of air (β) = 0.06-0.22. The flow pattern was documented with a digital camera and the pressure drop was measured using a U-type manometer. The results of the flow pattern with variations in the USL range of 0.30-0.50 m/s show a bubble flow pattern, as the USL value increases the concentration of bubbles tends to occupy the inner elbow. The pressure drop for two-phase flow decreases as the value of β in the flow increases, this is due to the decrease in the density value of the flow. The lowest pressure drop occurred at USL 0.30 m/s and β 0.22 which was 3628.591 N/m2, while the highest pressure drop occurred at USL 0.50 m/s and β 0.06 which was 3892.67 N/m2.
